How do we manage school shootings?
There is no easy answer.
In discussions with colleagues, there have been several suggestions worth considering. Since the legislatures aren’t up to it, then the schools must install metal detectors. It’s costly but every person would have to pass through and it would create a safer environment. And, because of the associated cost, it might spur legislatures to take some actions on gun laws.
Another aid is more attention to mental health. School counselors are overburdened and need more help, but they are the first line of recognition for problems that students might be experiencing. Adding more school psychologists for support is another idea. Teachers should report any suspicious activity to counselors so they can follow up. Everything has a cost. But do student lives have a price tag?
